NSF Director and Mollohan Visit WVU

Arden Bement, director of the National Science Foundation and Rep. Alan Mollohan, D-W.Va., took a two-hour tour of West Virginia University facilities. Bement was impressed with the science he saw at the university. The visit marked the first time the director had visited the campus since 1991, said Lawrence Hornak professor at the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering

Bement talked with students from the Department of Physics and the Department of Engineering about the nanotechnology researches they were exploring including the iris scan by the biometrics area of engineering.

From the Lewis Group, undergraduates Brooke Adams, Jacob Fennick, Larry Rush, and Jessica Stalnaker had the opportunity to talk with the director and display their current work.

In an interview with the Dominion Post, Bement said, “It was something that I’ve been trying to work into my schedule for some time. The students are great, they communicate well, they know their subjects well, they are highly enthusiastic.”

NSF was able to give WVU over $8 million dollars in grant money in 2007.
